Asus Eee PC 900

You might remember the Eee PC mini notebook that received high praises when it first entered the market in 2007. Well, the Asus Eee PC 900 is an improvement over that highly affordable notebook and is destined to continue impressing its users.

Much like the original EEE pc, the keyboard is extremely compact yet quite firm and don't "wiggle" nearly as much as normal keyboards. This is a big plus seeing as it could be challenging enough to type on such a small keyboard. However, the touchpad is quite convenient with its multi-touch functionality with easy zooming.

The first improvement you might notice is the improved screen resolution. The original Eee PC had a native 800 x 480 display, while the Eee PC 900 shows 1024 x 600 pixels on its small 8.9 inch screen. Its other dimensions are 22.5cm x 17cm x 2cm~3.4cm. As you would expect from such an ultra-mobile notebook, it weighs only 2.2lbs with the 4-cell 5800 mAh battery and only 2.8lbs with the AC adapter.

All of its other specs have improved as well. The Eee PC 900 is powered by an Intel Celeron M ULV 900MHz processor with 1GB of DDR2 RAM (667MHz). The runs a Windows XP operating system instead of the resource-intensive Windows Vista, although the option for Linux would have also been nice.

Other goodies include 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 VGA monitor out, a headphone jack, microphone input, SD card reader (SDHC compatible), Kensington lock slot, a Ethernet 10/100 slot. There is also an internal Atheros wireless card that is compatible with 802.11 b/g and a built-in 1.3 MegaPixel webcam.

I would recommend this notebook for those who are looking for a super-mobile notebook who doesn't need the power of a desktop computer. With a sub-gig "celery" processor, you won't exactly be running a server off of this machine. Nonetheless, with such incredible mobility, the Asus Eee PC 900 comes off as very attractive with its unbelievably low price tag of about $500.

This would be the go-to notebook if you want something that is new and affordable.
